Historical Snow Depths for Northern Hemisphere

This project contains a collection of historical snow depths from Central Asia, Russia, Canada and the U.S.A.. The data came from 2 different sources Environment Canada and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). Below a short description and a link to a webpage with more information about each dataset. The Canadian Ice Thickness Program, 1947-2010 (Environment Canada): This data collection contains snow depth measurements for sites going back as far as 1947 for the first established stations in the Canadian Arctic (Eureka and Resolute). For more information please visit: Russian River Ice Thickness and Duration, 1917-1992 (NSIDC): The data set includes values from 1917 through 1992, however the record length varies for each station. The longest station record covers the period 1917 through 1988. Data were obtained through the U.S.-Russia Working Group VIII of the U.S.-Russia Bilateral Agreement on the Protection of Environmental and Natural Resources. For more information please visit: Central Asian Snow Cover from Hydrometeorological Surveys, 1932-1990 (NSIDC): The Central Asian Snow Cover from Hydrometeorological Surveys data are based on observations made by personnel for three river basins: Amu Darya, Sir Darya, and Naryn. Temporal coverage varies for each snow point, with the longest station record extending from 1932 through 1990. Data were provided to NSIDC by the State Hydrometeorological Service (Russian acronym SANIGMI) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. For more information please visit: Seasonal frost depths, midwestern USA, 1971-1981 (NSIDC): This dataset is from 37 stations in the Upper Midwest (Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin), USA. The responsible agency was the St. Paul District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These data were collected during 1971-1981 (no data for 1976/77) by cooperative observers who gathered the data for use in their spring run-off hydrologic predictions.
